Ability Impact Centre Launches Media Toolkit to Amplify the Voices of OPDs Across Africa

The Ability Impact Centre (AIC) has launched a groundbreaking Media Toolkit for Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), designed to strengthen their capacity to engage with the media, tell compelling stories, and amplify their impact across Africa.

The virtual launch event, held via Zoom, was led by Mr. Dipo Adesida, who delivered an inspiring keynote address underscoring the toolkit’s importance in reshaping narratives around disability and development.

He emphasized that effective communication is a powerful catalyst for inclusion, policy influence, and social change, noting that “the toolkit is not just a guide, it’s a bridge for OPDs to tell their own stories with confidence and clarity.”

The event featured an engaging fireside chat between AIC Co-founder, Olusola Adeyefa, and Elizabeth Adams, National Youth Secretary of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Nigeria.

Their discussion explored the toolkit’s practical applications, highlighting how its step-by-step modules, templates, and worksheets can help OPDs build strong media relationships, craft powerful advocacy messages, and leverage digital campaigns for inclusion.

The Media Toolkit, as presented during the event, includes practical guides such as “How to Write Press Releases That Get Noticed,” “Engaging Journalists,” “Designing Digital Campaigns with Impact,” and “Crafting an Organisation’s Signature Advocacy Message.”

Each section is complemented by ready-to-use templates, checklists, and worksheets designed to make advocacy communication simple, structured, and strategic for OPDs.

In his closing remarks, AIC Co-founder, Akpevwe Peters, expressed gratitude to all participants and partners, urging OPDs to actively apply the toolkit and collaborate with AIC in future storytelling and media capacity initiatives.

“Every OPD has a story worth telling. This toolkit is a microphone for those stories, helping organisations move from being unheard to being influential,” Peters said.

The launch was moderated by Medau Onyema, Head of Programs at AIC, and Allen Abu, Head of Communications at AIC, who both reaffirmed AIC’s commitment to fostering an inclusive media landscape where persons with disabilities lead the narrative on their development journey.
